Media violence: why it is bad for children Violence can be seen everywhere even when we are not looking for it. Specifically on television, video games, and on the web. Something as simple as turning on the television and watching the morning news can even portray some violence. Many experts have debated over whether violent media has any effect on a child’s behavior. I think that many people don’t see this as an issue. Possibly because we have integrated violence as a part of society. But I feel that excessive exposure to violent media will have negative effects on a child’s psychological health and well-being. According to the American Psychological association â€Å"Ninety-seven percent of adolescents age 12-17 play video games — on a computer, on consoles suc h as the Wii, PlayStation and Xbox, or on portable devices such as Gameboys, smartphones and tablets.† That’s an outstanding number of children who play games so what kind of issue does this arise. So much has been said to contradict that violent games like for example â€Å"grand theft auto† don’t have any effect on behavior of children when in fact it does. According to Andrea Norcia, M.A â€Å"Children are more likely to imitate the actions of a character with whom they identify. In violent video games, players participate as a character, and even choose which weapons they’ll use while fighting other characters.† Kids will become aggressive playing too much violent games, they get into their character and usually move up levels which makes them feel rewarded almost like a cycle. They’ll play feel happy and rewarded and keep playing. Games like grand theft auto are so violent they portray characters beating up anyone who comes their way to reach the goal. They are shooting and killing innocent people in the game with no remorse. I’ve seen some of my nephews play the game they get into it as if they are the actual character screaming, yelling at the TV. It is interesting to see.
